There's plenty to do in Croatia, a place to be and be seen. Already planning to hit the Croatian beaches along the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia, but also looking for a relaxing escape from the heat and the heavy tourist grind? The nearby region of Primorje Gorski Kotar beckons just a hop and a skip away from the Kangaroo Lodge .

Primorje Gorski Kotar: Croatia's Best-Kept Secret

Bay of Kvarner
This beautiful Kvarner region consists of the islands of Krk, Susak, Cres, Losinj and coastal towns like Opatija and Crikvenica, as well as major port and capital city Rijeka. And with the car, everything is just a hop-scotch away.
Trade the rocky coast for fine sandy beaches with a visit to the unique island of Susak. Or take a stroll along the famous 12 km promenade in Opatija, "the Nice of the Adriatic", where you can enjoy Croatian delicacies, mouthwatering seafood and prosciutto, complimented by world-renowned wines from local wineries.

Between our local day-trip suggestions and a convenient stay at the Kangaroo Lodge to rest and recharge, we'll see to it that you're relaxed, refreshed, and ready to go for the next stage of your adventure.
Gorski Kotar
The mountainous region of Gorski Kotar (where the Kangaroo Lodge is located), appropriately nicknamed the "green lungs of Croatia" or "Croatian Switzerland", has an average altitude of 800m above sea level. The highest peak is Bjelolasica at 1534m followed by Risnjak at 1528m.

Close to the sea and yet removed from the coastal hustle and bustle, the region offers a touch of tranquility throughout the year. Even during the summer months the air is pleasantly fresh, and in the winter the area transforms into a magical wonderland seemingly imagined from old postcards.

Holiday adventurers and nature lovers will find a variety of activities any time of the year, from hiking, skiing, fishing, and rafting to mushroom- and berry-picking, hunting, and more. Afterward, treat yourself to the rich local gastronomic specialties prepared from forest fruits and venisons and find your strength restored.  You should not miss out on the most famous Kamacnik restaurant, preparing regional specialties.  It located only 15 minutes away from the Kangaroo Lodge.

Gorski Kotar Must-Visit Locales:
  • Risnjak National Park
  • Lokve Lake
  • Brod na Kupi, village in Delnice famous for rafting, canyoning, and kayaking on the Kupa River along the border of Croatia and Slovenia

Coasts of Istria and Dalmatia:  Kangaroo Takes You There

Place to Be and Be Seen

In the 1970's and 80's, Yugoslavia drew more travelers than any other European country besides Spain; most of them were bound for Istria and Dalmatia. Today Croatia is once again reclaiming the status as one of Europe's hottest vacation spots.

Istria, an Unforgettable Experience

The heart-shaped peninsula of Istria, once belonging to Italy, is located in the Adriatic Sea between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf.

Experience popular coastal cities like Pula, Roving ,Porec and Umag with access to amazing pebbly beaches, summer festivals and resorts, sporting events (like the ATP Tennis Tournament in Umag), jazz concerts, wineries and more which attract millions of tourists each year. And for a more international experience, neighbouring Italy and Slovenia are only a short drive away from the Kangaroo Lodge.

Dalmatian Coast, the Next Riviera

The Dalamatian Coast bears a resemblance to Cannes, Positano, and Prague but with less tourist veneer and more affordable prices. The Makarska Riviera, from the town Makarska to Bratus and Tucepi, features one of the most stunning beaches in the world, while the cities of Split and Dubrovnik offer a sailing and yachting scene like no other, and remarkably well-preserved ancient towns hold vivid examples of Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Slavic architecture.
